Twelve well-dressed persons around a mahogany table. Little different than other corporate board rooms. But the one door in this room was bracketed by two guards -- heavies personally picked by Raeder. Raeder paced around the table, trying to keep a lid on his fury and failing. At Raeder's passing the others stiffened as if a huge spider had alighted on their shoulders. "Gentlemen, gentlemen, we have had a very bad year. Very unlucky. How have the authorities gained such an upper hand on us, gentlemen? Laziness, some. Stupidity, yes. Both will stop very soon now." Upon reaching Liddel, Raeder slipped an envelope from his vest and dropped it front of Liddel. "But this, Liddel, explains much more." Amelia Pike sat opposite Liddel at the table. She had spent months driving a wedge between the two crminal masters, and finally planting those papers in Liddel's safe. Now the murderer Liddel would die or convince Raeder that he was framed. This was the truly dangerous part of the game? |
