If you are new to Duel of Ages, take a few minutes to study this tutorial. It will set you up for an easy read
through the rulebook.
[NOTE] If you have not read the introduction you might want to take a moment to do so.
Start The Game
Sam is playing Jen. They have shuffled the decks, ready to begin. This is their first learning game. So, they agree to play with only three
characters each. They decide to play for just one hour, to get a feel for the game.
Sam deals three character cards face-down to Jen, and to himself. They look at their cards, but do not show the other player.
Pull out Annie Oakley and Grok from the character deck. They are our main actors in this story.
Sam and Jen roll dice to determine teams. Sam is Team Black, Jen is Team White.
Build The Map
The players now takes turning placing platters and Dome keys. Sam is Team Black, so he begins. He places the Lithopolis platter and the 1-3-3
Dome key together. Jen adds Colossus and the 1-2-5 key. Sam adds The Forge and the 5-6-6 key. Jen adds The Glade and the 2-2-4 key. Finally,
Sam adds the 1-2-3 key and Jen adds the 1-4-4 key.
Reveal Characters
It is now time for Sam and Jen to reveal their characters. They lay the character cards face-up in front of them. They gather the character
markers that match the logos on the cards.
Annie Gets A Gun
In the equipment (white) deck, find the Gyroneedler...
Normally, characters do not begin the game with equipment. But, Annie Oakley begins the game with one equipment card. Jen draws one card
from the white deck and places it under Annie's card. It is the Gyroneedler a good card for Annie. Jen keeps the card face-down so Sam
cannot see it.
Add Labryinth Keys
Sam is Team Black, so he is allowed to place the first labyrinth key.
-
Sam has Grok. Jen has no Future characters. That makes the Future labyrinth more valuable for Sam's team. So, he places the Future
labyrinth in a good place between two close Dome keys.
- Jen is next. She has two Colonial characters. She places the Colonial key close to the 1-2-3 Dome key.
- Sam then selects and places the Modern key.
- Jen places the final key. She has no choice but to place the Ancient key in the empty cranny.
The players then place a Team White and a Team Black marker on the red eye in each of the four labyrinths.
1) Jen's Turn 1 (Team White)
It is now Team White's first turn. Jen has nothing to do on the first turn except to bring on two characters during the Reinforce phase.
She picks Kit Carson and rolls one die. A 2. Jen decides to place Kit in the #2 Dome near the Colonial labyrinth.
Then she picks Annie Oakley and rolls a 5. She places Annie on the #5 Dome close to the Future labyrinth.
That is the end of Jen's turn 1.
2) Sam's Turn 1 (Team Black)
Sam also has nothing to do but reinforce with two characters.
He selects Geronimo and rolls a 1. He places Geronimo in the #1 Dome near the Colonial labyrinth.
He then selects Grok and rolls a 2. He places Grok in the #2 Dome near Annie Oakley.
Sam's turn 1 is done.
