Minister Lev sits me down. “How’s your family doing?”

I had a feeling Lev was going to bring up the attack at the pancake house. It’s not every day you see people killed.

“My kids couldn’t see any of the fighting,” I say. “The window was too high for them to look out. Weapons were silent until the Good Guys fired off that datt gun.”

Lev nods. “Good. Now that you’ve had time to think, you okay?”

I decide to lie. “Fine. Saw worse in my time of service. Haven’t heard a datt gun go off for years. I’m surprised law enforcement is sporting that kind of military firepower.”

Lev passes it off. “We’ll increase security on you and your family, and the police will do the same. But they don’t expect anything new. They’re confident they took out the crew that was after you.”

“They know why they were after me?”

“Authorities believe it was a kidnapping ring. Must’ve known we’d pay plenty to get you back.”

I thank him. Pretty sure he’s lying, though. I ask for time with Ambassador Drake Ekard. I’m surprised when Drake comms yes, he’s on the Waterfall Trail.

I meet him there. He says he has fifteen minutes. Going off-system in an hour.

Choose:

1. I ask about the Pancake House incident. I explain to Drake that I intend to employ private security, and to find out who is really going after me.

2. I ask about how he recruited the team. I explain to Drake that I have concerns about bringing so many unknown individuals from so many planets together, and perhaps some are foreign agents.

3. I ask about the athletes. I have a job to do, and I’ll focus on that.
